We arrived! I would like to say that I cant believe our luck that we've had, but I now feel that saying "unbelieveable" is sacreligious, and "luck" implies that you received something that you did not deserve....

I realize now that I did not ever tell the story of my first European hitchhiking experience, so here it is, although keep in mind that the story cannot possibly capture all of the glory that the experience really is.
for about 45 minutes, when i had a split second
inspiration to make another sign, Jess continued
holding the sign that said "Wien" while i went and made
a new sign that said "Gyor", a city exactly halfway
between budapest and vienna. i told her to continue
standing at the exit of the station and decided that i
would take our new sign and go stand near the highway,
you know, just in case. it all happened so fast, but
the next thing i know, a beautiful car pulls right
over to the shoulder, a lovely Hungarian couple who
signal us to get in. It was such a rush, and before we
knew what was happening, we were in the car on our way
to Gyor. I put out my hand from the backseat and say,
hello my name is Jessica. The man reaches back, and
very kindly says, Hello Jessica. My name is Peter.
(please read my blog called "A Beautiful Letter From Charlotte" for the meaning behind this coincidence). The couple are very lovely newlyweds who spent their honeymoon in Bali. Their English was limited, but we had a very pleasant conversation. When we got to Gyor they dropped us off at another Esso station, and we thanked them again and said goodbye. We took a break and had some lunch in the station, then we headed to the station exit, and this time in less than 45 minutes a very well-dressed German-Turkish businessman named Aldin offered us a ride. He spoke some German with me and told us about his family and two kids. We did not have a place to stay yet in Vienna because it was such a last minute decision, but we soon received a call from a man who saw my post that I left in the Vienna-couchsurfing group and offered us his place in the center of the city. We were so blessed because not only did Aldin take us into the city, but he used his GPS system to look up our host`s address and dropped us right off at the front door. Wow.
From Budapest to Vienna:
Jess and I stood in front of the Esso gas station where
our previous couchsurfing host had dropped us off. we stood in the sunfor about 45 minutes, when i had a split second

Jess left Vienna to go back to Spain on July 15th. I wanted to continue hitchhiking but did not want to adventure alone, so I posted a message on couchsurfing in a number of different "groups" saying that I was looking for a partner for a random adventure. One day later I received a message from Danielle, an American girl who just moved to Vienna to be an Au Pair. She had just joined couchsurfing and saw my post and wanted to join, so we met for coffee to talk about our adventure, and pretty much instantly fell in love...like we have been best friends forever.
Vienna to Prague:
We decided to get an early start, hoping that if we left by 8 am we might with the best luck make the 4 hour trip before dinner. You just never know how long it will take to get a ride. We made two signs again, one that said Praha, and one that said Brno, another small city between Wien and Prague. We found a good place to try hitching from on a website called hitchwiki (the wikipedia for hitchhiking)...it was a very obscure place to find (under a bridge, over some tracks, etc), but alas some nice construction guys pointed us in the right direction without us even asking. We must have looked lost. We were instantly offered a ride by two truck drivers...but no. They wanted to split us up and we did not like that, besides it is illegal for truckers to take hitchhikers. We stood with our signs for about 45 minutes when another truck driver (this time a small truck hauling a small commercial car) offered us a ride to Brno. The man was Italian and spoke no English, but he was very nice. We were stopped at the border and searched by the Politzei, SO SCARY, but we finally made it to Brno and the man went out of his way to take us to another gas station that was on the direct motorway to Prague. Ok, so here it comes, we were literally there for less than 3 minutes, in fact I was bent over trying to dig something out of my bag when Danielle goes, "Uhhhhhh, Jes... I think I got something." I look up and a man in a really nice Crysler gets out, grabs our bags and we go. He is a Czech guy named Oliver (?), but he said we can call him Lord (inside joke that came up after he made a reference to Shrek and Lord Farquad). He owns his own international consulting business, training business professionals in the art of tapping into the energy of the universe :) :) :) He has a wife and 2 kids, a boy named Michael and his little girl that he only refers to as Princess. The 3 of us were getting along so well, that when he asked what our plans were in Prague and we told him that we had none and no where to stay yet, he offered us his home. So here I am in his BEAUTIFUL home in the hills overlooking the whole city, writing this blog, on such a high from hitching. We made it here by 2:00...how amazing. Right now Oliver is at a meeting with Shell Oil, but then he is coming back to take us out to his favorite bar and restaurant. When I mentioned we needed to stop and exchange our money, he smiled and said not to worry about it. Tomorrow he has a meeting with Coca Cola, but then he is taking us to lunch and showing us the city.
When you feel good, good things come your way
Ich werde immer Wien lieben, aber jetze muss Ich nach PRAHA gehen

hey family! i made it to budapest. as i was about to get off the plane i noticed that an aquaintance from my apartment building in utrecht was seated behind me. his name is Milan and hes from budapest. he gave me a list of fun things to see and do, and gave me written directions of exactly how to meet up with my friends, and thank god, because it involved a bus ride to the metro, a train, and then a tram. i am so thankful because i think i would have gotten so lost without his help. i met up with Ian and Jesse, two really great guys that surfed my couch in Utrecht for 5 days earlier in June. ACtually we met outside of couchsrufing when they accidently showed up at a drag show chris and i were performing in in amsterdam. they have been hitchhiking across europe for 2 months now, started in ireland. a week ago they decided to try to make it all the way around the world. amazing..simply amazing. i cant describe well enough how much fun it is to be around these guys, and they make excellent travel buddies. we are couch surfing together with a very cute hungarian guy named Daniel who lives with his sisters and parents and he is one hell of a host. we are having a blast. in a few days Jesse is heading east, but Ian is going to take me hitchhiking with him through prague and vienna, yay! ill be with an expert so dont worry. someone call mom for me and read her this post because she wont have internet for 10 days and was very adament that someone back home keep her up to date with my blog...i would appreciate it :) also tell her HAPPY ANNIVERSARY for me!!
keep on keepin on....see you all soon

Charlotte and I met at the Berlin Beach Camp. We knew instantly we were soul mates, just take a look at us :-P Charlotte is this incredible girl who decided that if she ever wanted to achieve her dream of hitchhiking across Europe, then she must just do it, so when her grandmother died, she quit everything, her job, school, everything, and bought a plane ticket. This girl is so inspiring, well, we inspire each other. Anyway, she stayed with me for a while here in Utrecht until she decided it was time to head out again. The night before we left we performed a manifestation spell, willing good times, adventure, money, and love for the both of us. She just made it back to the US after a month more of traveling since Utrecht. Apparently she met up with Naomi, another incredible girl whom we met in Berlin together. This was the perfect thing to wake up to as I prepare myself for my trek from Budapest and back.....
jes,
ohhhh my god. i am now in detroit. i dont think i
want to live in america anymore. wow i have so
fucking much to tell you.
the last two weeks have been the most incredible...
naomi and i met up and hitchhiked through poland,
austria, hungary, and germany. jes thanks for your
fucking inspiration, we learned how to create our own
story with the universe. never before have i
experienced such flow. we never had anything planned,
showed up in a new country at 11pm with no plan of a
couch, but it always worked out. we started making
wishes, this i think started when we were in krakow.
we had nowhere to stay and spent the whole night at
this bar, the owners name was peter and although he
hadn't said that we could stay with him we just knew
that he had to be the one. the bar closed and we
left, dragged along by people who took us to another
bar as our hearts began to rip apart. immediately
they left and we were there alone on the curb kinda
starting to freak out, i wanted to find peter and
naomi said that he had to come and find us. we sat
there begging for him to come, saying his name over
and over, and then i see his face appear, he
specifically came to find us, to save us. after that
we kept on making wishes, the next night in bratislava
we decided that the nights perfect outcome would be
"tonight we will meet some fun punk rock guys and stay
up all night with them and they will give us a couch".
we were at a gas station outside of town, very twilight
zone sort of feel, and we were begging for a peter to
come and save us. this romanian guy takes us into
town, searches like crazy on his gps for some hostel
(that we didnt plan on actually staying at, it was
just all we knew of the town) he asks all kinds of
people and leads us in a strange area outside of the
center. right where he dropps us off is this cool
looking bar so we go inside to check it out. they
were supposed to close in a half an hour, "fuck" well
we got a drink anyway. soon enough we get into
conversation with the bartender who is rad as hell,
"so whats your name" "my name is peter, but people
call me seki" naomi and i give each other a darting
look and start laughing like crazy. he ended up
keeping the bar open till five in the morning, him,
us, and these two rad punk rock guys from sweden.
next wish- we were in vienna trying to get to munich,
nobody stopped for hours, we were so hot and tired, so
the wish- "haha i could sure go for an energy drink
right now, how about the person who stops for us will
be an energy drink distributor". someone finally
stopps, and he is going in the opposite direction to
hungary. we get in the car anyway, maybe he can drop
us at a gas station at least. then he starts to talk-
funny, but my brother is leaving for munich in the
morning at 7, and actually i have to meet up with him,
i'm only going to budapest for the night and leaving at
4am to meet up with my brother. ROAD TRIP!!!!!!! it
was so perfect. then we notice that he has all these
empty cans of redbull. "you don't happen to work for
redbull do you?" ofcourse he did, and he had cases of
redbull for us to drink along the way!
so later naomi and i split up. i try to get to france,
but cant go directly there and end going very far north
to belgium. a trucker asks me "how much?" and i get
out at the next station. i wish for someone to pick
me up and give me a couch, then robin came. i could
have fallen so madly in love with this guy, and i got
the impression that he didnt want me to go. but hes
got a gf. one of those people who you don't feel the
need to ask any questions because you have known them
forever... smitten.
I was so close to missing my flight, in fact i put off
going to france until the very very last min, didn't
even see paris because i didn't give myself enough
time to hitchhike (i was looking at my watch standing
on the side of the road with a sign... oh fuck i'm
gonna miss my flight) someone picked me up and dropped
me at the airport about a half hour before my flight
left, made it on the plane five minutes before
takeoff.
ahh i was so hoping that i would miss my flight, and i
couldn't make the decision my self so i asked the
universe to do it for me, sitting there flipping
coins, tearing up as i left belgium... i asked for a
really obvious sign that i should stay, and when some
came up i ignored them, i think out of fear to take
that extra jump further into oblivion (after already
delving pretty far into a life of serendipity and
uncertainty). robin and i were sitting by the river,
across on the other bank the word love was spray
painted, then as we came to his car i wondered how i
hadn't seen it before because it was so huge, another
giant love spray painted right next to his car. when
i was conflicted, and considering the possibility of
missing my flight he said "if you change your mind and
decide to go..." shit, i should have stayed.
when i left belgium i sang hit the road jack (one of
the standard songs in my head at all times), robin
pointed out how appropriate that was for me as i was
leaving... when i arrived in Chicago i started
sobbing, couldn't stop for maybe an hour and i was
trying desperately to call deborah from a pay phone
and the coins kept on falling through, someone playing
sax in the station played hit the road jack. like i
said, i wanted to stay in belgium, and interestingly
enough the guy i sat next to on the plain was an
american who is living and studying in belgium...
(before leaving, my last wish was to meet someone who
gave me insight into my next journey, and two options
came up that i think i must follow - backpacking
through thailand, and studying in belgium).
i felt a little bit like i betrayed the universe by
leaving (it has been so good to me!) but i have some
business that i need to attend to in the states, i
cant wait to see all of you guys! my worry that i made
the wrong decision is gone, because there is no such
thing as a wrong decision as long as i continue to
follow the road that i am creating for myself, so i
think my time here will be spent well and i am excited
to begin to organize the rest of my life.
i stayed in Chicago for one night with some interesting
traveling kids, (one told me she would take me train
hopping on the west coast once i'm out there) now i am
in detroit. i have no idea how long i will stay here.
makes me a little nervous actually, god and coming to
the midwest from europe is a complete culture shock,
but detroit has some interesting stuff going on, this
weekend i'm going to see Parliament funkadelic for
free, making plans of road trips to Chicago and new
york, photo art days to check out some of the rotting
buildings. i am excited about free coffee refills.
ok, im done. whew. I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!

HELL YA!! I can't believe I'm done, but I am. Now I am packing up my little Dutch apartment and saying my goodbyes. Goodbyes always feel so surreal to me, I just go through the motions, but never actually feel the reality until later.
On July 2 I fly from Holland to Budapest where I'll be meeting up with two very awesome guys that couch surfed with me earlier this month. I'll be surfing around Budapest with them for about a week, and then my friend Jess who has been abroad in Spain will be meeting me on the 8th. Then the two of us have three weeks to backpack. Our plan is to go Budapest>Vienna>Prague>Germany. I have to make it back to Holland to fly home on the 23rd. This is all very exciting and I think I deserve all the adventure I can handle. I really do plan on finding internet cafes and keeping ya'll updated as I travel.
See you on the other side!

my adventurous life really picked up since i started traveling. it's wearing me out, but i'm still not quite ready for it to stop. as soon as i got back from Spain, my old college roommate (i canNOT believe that I can say the sentence "my old college roommate") was coming through Amsterdam after an 18 month excursion on this side of the world. Kim graduated during the winter of my junior year, and went to teach english with her finance' Tyler in China for a year. They left China sometime in March, and have been touring all over the world, you know, BEFORE they return home for their wedding July 26. They left China and visited our other roommate Brad who has been studying in Thailand for the last year. Then they made their way west, and Amsterdam was their last stop before heading back to good ol' Wisconsin. It was strange to see Kim-bo after so long, mostly because my mind could NOT comprehend that it had been 18 months since I had seen her last. Kim and Tyler left before I got into my stand-up career, so when they came to the show that Chris and I were in on Saturday night in Amsterdam it was the first time they had seen my new life! They loved it. The show was a queer-gendered drag show (of sorts). It was very strange as far as drag shows go because "Drag Queens" and Transgendered individuals live in two completely different worlds. Nonetheless, Chris and I performed in the fundraiser, and it was a really good performance for both of us. It felt SOOOO good to be funny again, especially after the last time I flopped. It was also really fun to have Kim and Tyler in the audience, and I must give them props for being such good sports about it :) I started my set like this: "After performing for a variety of Dutch audiences, I have learned that it is a good idea to reveal my identity before I really begin, and I feel that this atmosphere is perfect for that, so, I'd like to take this time to go ahead and 'come out' to all of you......my name is Jes....and I....am an American." There was a lively amount of laughter, and then a Dutch woman in the audience shouted "Don't worry baby! It's not your fault!" To which I replied energetically, "I KNOW! I CAN'T HELP IT! I WAS BORN THIS WAY! It was not a choice!" The queer crowd LOVED it. This was probably one of my best openings yet. The rest of the show wasn't flawless, however, since a lot of my lesbian humor wasn't as well recieved as you would imagine, stressing once again that Transgender issues, however queer they may be, are not issues about sexuality, but only about gender.
Anyway, here's a picture of me and Kimbo outside the Pannenkuchen Huis (Pancake House) in Amsterdam. I am dressed up for my performance (minus the fidora hat and bowtie)
